(More customer reviews)Dual XR4110 Mechless Digital Media Receiver
Wasn't sure what to expect after reading the variety of impressions in previous reviews, but figured it was worth $40 to take a chance.
PROS:
- Better than expected AM/FM tuner with 18 FM and 12 AM presets. Range is better than the premium stereo in our Chrysler Town & County. No memory loss with this unit.
- All 3 digital inputs worked on first attempt and volume level was even with the radio tuner. That's good as there is no way to adjust it.
- I input internet radio from my Moto Droid thru the Aux input. It works great! If you are a Pandora user this is the way to go!
- Sound is decent. If you need booming bass, you already have an external amp and sub, right? Hook it up!
- My car has a separate clock, so I don't miss that.
CONS:
- My only real complaint is that the display doesn't dim with the lights. Anybody got a left-over scrap of light grey window tint?
I'm a retired USN ET & CATV Engineer who started as a teenage hillbilly car stereo installer. A good 8-track in those days put out a whopping 14 watts!
My experience tells me that even a simple unit like this can sound fantastic with good speakers. Maybe replacing old, worn-out speakers with quality new ones of the proper wattage would satisfy those who aren't impressed with the sound.
If you're an audiofile who lives in the vehicle, what are you looking at something like this for anyway?

This "mechless" receiver from Dual Electronics does away with mechanical playback entirely--no discs, no cassettes--just your digital music collection on USB devices or SD cards, your favorite digital music player through the auxiliary input, or some AM/FM radio.
USB/SD Playback The XR4110 features a convenient front-panel USB (1.1) port, for playback of your favorite MP3/WMA files. Connect USB devices with up to 16 GB capacities, and access hours of programming.
Right next to the USB port is a slot for SD cards. Support for SD cards is also 16 GB, giving you yet another storage option for your MP3s and WMAs. SD cards are even more convenient for quickly swapping out, for an almost infinite amount of music right there in your glove compartment.
Auxiliary Input Of course, most folks with a substantial digital music collection also have a favorite iPod or other MP3 player. The standard 3.5-mm mini jack aux input lets you connect and enjoy it. And yes, you can even hook up a portable CD player if you wanted some good old-fashioned skipping playback.
AM/FM Radio Listen to your favorite morning show or catch up on the traffic, news, or weather with the built-in AM/FM tuner. Eighteen FM and 12 AM presets let you instantly pull up your favorite stations.
Blue Display The XR4110 features a brilliant blue four-character display, along with matching blue button illumination.
Preamp Outputs The XR4110 has 60 watts of total power (15 watts x 4 channels), but if you'd like a little more, a pair of 2V preamp outputs is included for system expansion.
One-Year Warranty Dual offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
